Steyn injury a worry for South Africa

South Africa fast bowler Dale Steyn is a doubt for the opening match of the Champions Trophy, against India in Cardiff on Thursday (June 6), because of a side strain.

Steyn felt discomfort in the Proteas' warm-up match against Pakistan and bowled only five overs.

South Africa team manager Dr Mohammed Moosajee said Tuesday: "Dale complained of some discomfort during the warm-up match against Pakistan on Monday and, because of the sensitive nature of the affected area, he was subsequently taken for an MRI scan which revealed mild swelling in a left intercostal muscle, in the region of the 11th and 12th rib.

"At this stage we are unable to determine whether he will be available for the first match against India in Cardiff, however, we will be assessing and treating intensively on a daily basis."

However, there was more encouraging news for all-rounder Robin Peterson, hit on the left foot in the same match.

"Robin suffered a hit to his left foot while batting yesterday," said Moosajee.

"He experienced some swelling and was advised not to bowl during the match as a precaution. He has, however, responded well to treatment overnight."

Cricket South Africa also announced that Quinton de Kock, who is not in the 15-man squad, will travel with the side during the Champions Trophy as potential back-up for wicket-keeper AB de Villiers.
